Bad news sells, right? Indeed it does, and unfortunately at the moment we are all bombarded with not so good news.
Apart from the pandemic, and if that’s not bad enough, I was reminded on Monday that Monday 18 January is Blue Monday, the saddest day of the year! I mean for goodness sake why would you want to be reminded of that? Although my take is, it will be if you belief it.
I’ve never heard of it before, but maybe that’s because I do make all effort to avoid any kind negativity in my life, which I know is pretty difficult at the moment.
So, I thought I would share some of my strategies for keeping a positive and upbeat mindset when surrounded by negativity.
Surround Yourself With Positive People
Yes, I know easier said than done. You don’t get to choose the people you work with or your family, who sometimes can include energy sapping relatives. The trick is to avoid involving yourself in their negative conversations or energy as that’s only going to cause you to do the same.
You do get to choose your friends, so make sure you choose like-minded, fun and positive people who lift you up and not drag you down.
Avoid Negative Thinking
Yes bad things happen and of course we think about them and have emotional reactions to them, but we have to let them go. If we constantly think negatively, those thoughts will envelope us. We must, overtime, train ourselves to identify those negative thoughts and let them go.
I have a saying when I’ve have negative thoughts
“I see you, I feel you and now I’m letting you go”, and it really helps me reframe to a more positive mindset.
Remember we are always talking to ourselves, so do pay attention to the words that you say to yourself, because your mind will believe them. Show yourself some kindness and compassion. Keep your inner critic in check.
Practice Positive Self-Talk
Talk to yourself like you would a friend. Acknowledge your strengths and celebrate them. Tell yourself that you are the best, not in a cocky or arrogant way, but in a way that you are being the best you can be and doing the best that you can in whatever situation you find yourself in.
Be Grateful
I know I talk about this, but seriously we have so much to be grateful for. All the things that we take for granted, a warm comfy bed, food in the fridge, our pets, our friends, our family, fresh running water. There are so many many things.
Move Yourself
Again, I talk about this a lot! But one of the things that really lifts my spirits is getting out into nature. Whether that’s the local park or a day out (restrictions permitting).
I find it a real mood lifter sitting or walking in the quiet and solitude of nature. I love looking up at the clouds and watching the different patterns they make and seeing whether I can see ones that look like animals or birds. I saw an enormous albatross over the weekend! Let your inner child play.
Today on my daily walk, I was delighted to see snowdrops, and miniature viola in flower, the gorgeous purple and white was really beautiful. The daffodils are peeking and it won’t be too long before they are delighting us with glorious happy yellow carpets. How positive is that.
Why not share what you do to remain positive? I’d love to know.
